Construction Waste Portal supports SCAPE as a Gold Standard verified framework

Construction Waste Portal supports SCAPE as a Gold Standard verified framework

Last month, SCAPE announced that its suite of consultancy, civil engineering, construction and utilities frameworks had achieved Gold Standard verification through Constructing Excellence’s Constructing the Gold Standard initiative.

As the only performance management solution for managing construction waste used on its frameworks, Construction Waste Portal is thrilled to see SCAPE's approach to compliant, collaborative procurement – and the value it creates for clients – secure this well-deserved recognition.

Through its frameworks, which enable the delivery of low-carbon projects and programmes, SCAPE is committed to reducing construction waste and embodied carbon. One of its core objectives is to reduce waste intensity, and it has set bold targets that challenge its teams, clients and delivery partners to think differently.

Since 2022, SCAPE has adopted the Construction Waste Portal and embedded its use into its frameworks. We share their ambition for driving positive change and encouraging a smarter approach to waste creation and management on projects. This underscores our commitment to the circular economy and supporting a more sustainable future, as well as our shared values as part of the SCAPE Group.

Through the portal, we are enabling project teams to accurately predict, plan, and manage waste management outcomes and helping them to improve the cost, time and resource efficiency on their projects – as well as reducing waste, embodied carbon and emissions.

SCAPE has a strong network of regional and national delivery partners, and we work collaboratively with Balfour Beatty, Morgan Sindall Construction, Stepnell Construction and Gleeds and others to keep waste reduction on the agenda for public sector projects.

“We're using the Construction Waste Portal as a design tool to help architects and engineers see the hidden impacts of their designs, to inform project budgets and understand the true cost of construction waste."

David Wakelin, Director of Sustainability at Gleeds Advisory Ltd, continued: "The real-world data on the portal is fantastic for developing meaningful actions that reduce waste.”

The Gold Standard was informed by ‘An Independent Review of Public Sector Construction Frameworks’; a critical review endorsed by the Cabinet Office and conducted by Professor David Mosey CBE, which led to the creation of 24 recommendations for delivering “better, safer, faster, greener projects and programmes of work.”

As part of its Gold Standard verification, SCAPE had to evidence how its approach to procurement and framework management aligns with these recommendations , including how it facilitates the delivery of enhanced environmental and social project outcomes.

The Construction Waste Portal was named within the evidence that supported SCAPE’s application, within which three significant contributions were noted:

  • Using the Construction Waste Portal forms a central part of SCAPE’s approach to “creating contractually binding Gold Standard action plans to convert framework objectives into actions and timetables that deliver improved economic, social and environmental outcomes.”

  • Specific benchmarking of construction waste tonnage, carbon footprint and cost sourced from the Construction Waste Portal directly supports SCAPE’s investment in framework management that demonstrates value for money for clients and suppliers.

  • Investment in the Construction Waste Portal supports SCAPE’s commitment to creating environments that improve transparency and collaboration with the supply chain. Through the portal, it purposefully brings businesses in the waste and resource management industry contractors and designers together, who share its commitment to smarter, greener procurement.

“SCAPE’s approach to smarter procurement centres on maximising value for the public sector and the accurate data and efficient waste management solutions the Construction Waste Portal provides will be key to designing and delivering a more sustainable built environment."

Mark Robinson, SCAPE Group Chief Executive, continued: " We need innovative, efficient companies like this to drive down waste and accelerate the pace of decarbonisation, which will enable the wider industry to reduce its carbon footprint and operate more sustainably"

SCAPE is also recognised for its contribution to the wider carbon reduction agenda and collaborates with its peers and the wider industry to champion best practice. We are proud that the Construction Waste Portal plays an important role in supporting this and driving improvements in how construction waste is considered and managed on projects.

In ‘Building for public good, a charter for change,” SCAPE calls on central government and policymakers to set strict targets for construction waste on public procurement projects and advocates for the introduction of a cap on the amount of site waste permitted.
